Quality multimedia teaching at Metro South TAFE

Friday, 25 January 2008

Students of 3D animation at Metropolitan South TAFE (MSIT) in 2008, will benefit from quality teaching by one of the industry's true professionals and a recent $18 million upgrade of the Creative Industries Precinct.

Kelvin Baker, the lead teacher in Multimedia at MSIT was recently named a finalist in the 2007 Australian Effects and Animation Festival Awards.

Kelvin, a resident of New Farm, had entered an entertaining, four minute animation titled Bully and the Beast which explored themes of teenage bullying through the eyes of its lead characters - two animated flies.

The awards attracted some of the biggest names in special effects and animation, such as Pixar and Animal Logic, and entrants from around the world.

"It was an honour just to be named a finalist in a competition which has entrants of such a high calibre across ten categories," Kelvin said.

Kelvin believes the institute's recent $18 million investment in the Creative Industries Precinct at its Mt Gravatt campus will give students access to computer systems equal to the best in industry, using the latest computer software and programs.

"Animation is an ever-changing environment and the focus for Metropolitan South TAFE and the Creative Industries portfolio is towards continual improvement," he said.

"Animation is such a complex area with so much potential for growth within Australia."

Kelvin strives to pass on the very latest industry practices to his students.

"Breaking down the industry into skills sets helps to provide an industry benchmark which as teachers, we can apply to practice, job expectations and career pathways," he said.

Currently undertaking doctoral research into the Australian animation industry, Kelvin has sought to break down the ambiguity of the job descriptors of the various roles available within the animation industry to ensure skill sets and relevant qualifications are aligned.

"I'm incorporating aspects of my research to the Diploma of Screen (Digital Animation) to ensure my students are able to develop a portfolio and gain employability skills relevant to the industry," he said.
