Metropolitan South Institute of TAFE (MSIT) student Jeni Wycha has shown what hard work and self-determination can do by winning the Vocational Student of the Year Award at last nights Queensland Training Awards, held at the Brisbane Convention Centre.
The Queensland Training Awards, now in its 47th year, are held to recognise the outstanding achievements of individuals and organisations in the vocational education and training sector.
The Vocational Student of the Year Award is presented for outstanding achievement by a student who recently completed a vocational education and training qualification in Queensland.
Jeni, a mature-age student who completed a Certificate III and IV in Information Technology (Networking) said she was ecstatic at winning the prestigious award and amazed how far she had come since first enrolling at MSIT.
"I started my course without even knowing where to find the "on" switch on a computer. Now I'm completing my Diploma of Multimedia, have re-built several computers from scratch and plan to start my own business in web design and training," said Jeni.
"The thought of returning to study, as it is for many mature aged students, was terrifying. But with the support of my family, a fantastic teacher and new found friendships, I took the daunting step of walking into the classroom and haven't looked back since.
"It's such a thrill to win this award. My story is not one of ease, but one that is a testament to what can be achieved through TAFE training, which I see as so much more than a piece of paper. I am now excited by what I know I can achieve and what I know others can achieve, if they trust in their own abilities, step out of their comfort zones, have the courage to ask the 'silly' questions and really put their mind into it," said Jeni.
Linda Brown, Institute Director of MSIT was extremely proud of Jeni and her achievements and said that no one deserved this award more than her.
"Jeni is an absolute star, a remarkable woman and a testament to what someone can achieve when they put their mind to it. MSIT is so proud of her and what she has been able to achieve in such a short space of time," said Linda.
