Recognise employee skills
Is your business looking for a competitive edge? If you want to boost productivity, increase staff retention and enhance your business's reputation, then take the time to learn about Skills First.
We know that some of the most important lessons learnt are not in a classroom, but in life and work itself. With Skills First (formerly Recognition of Prior Learning) and MSIT, your employees can now gain recognition for the skills they gained through non-formal learning.
Our professional trainers are able to identify and assess the experience and abilities of your staff members and award them relevant formal qualifications.

What is Skills First?
Skills First allows your employees to have their skills and knowledge assessed by a registered training organisation. If their current skills are believed to meet today's industry standards, a full or part qualification may be awarded no matter how, when or where prior learning occurred.
Skills First can also be used to identify any further training your employees require to gain a qualification. This avoids any duplication of training, saving you time and money. It also ensures your employees have the best qualifications for today's industry.
Benefits to your business
Gaining recognised qualifications is a strong motivating factor for skilled staff to remain loyal to your business. It also reduces training costs and boosts productivity.
Having qualified workers is also becoming increasingly important in quality assurance for industries accessing global markets.
By having the existing skills of your employees formally recognised, your business may be able to:
-
identify current skills and gaps to target training investment
-
increase productivity and improve business reputation
-
engage a greater variety of work and expand to new markets
-
meet business objectives faster
-
gain or retain an edge over your competitors.
Supporting your employees
To help your employees gain formal qualifications, you will need to work with a registered training organisation.
An employee going through a recognition assessment process will need to provide evidence to an assessor that their skills meet today's industry standards.
How you can help your employees:
-
allow the assessor to observe your employees at work
-
provide information about your employees' work and skills
-
allow the assessor access to relevant documentation.
And that's not all.
You can support your employees in other ways. For instance, ensure they are aware of the assessment requirements and have gathered the evidence to help them demonstrate their skills and knowledge. Work samples, photos of work samples, training certificates, resume and performance reviews. All are important in helping the assessor evaluate the skills of your people.
Finally, be prepared to support your employees by offering a reference, and by encouraging their direct supervisors or others in the community to offer one.

It is possible to ask the assesor about obtaining a copy of the snapshots of units of competency for the qualification. These snapshots will help decide whether their skills could be recognised against these units of competency. Full details of any unit can be obtained from the assessor or from the National Training Information Service (NTIS) website.
