To become an adult literacy volunteer tutor at the Metropolitan South Institute of TAFE you must complete a free Course in Volunteer Tutoring (39213QLD).
This volunteer tutor training, short training course allows you to acquire basic skills and knowledge of the principles and practice of adult literacy learning.
The course is part of a nationally accredited qualification. It has been specifically designed for people in the community who are motivated by interest in the field, and by compassion for others, to work alongside those with English language or literacy difficulties.

Course prerequisites
This course is for adults who want to give their time to be involved in adult literacy volunteer tutoring with a student, without receiving paid remuneration. Learners need to have a high level of skill in written and verbal English.
How long is the course?
The course is delivered at all campuses usually over a 10 week period, with start dates throughout the year.
Adult literacy volunteer tutors often work for between one and three hours per week to meet the course requirements of 40 hours of practical tutoring. There is some flexibility in terms of the time commitment and schedule required.
It is anticipated that those who have undergone this adult literacy volunteer tutor training will dedicate their time over the next 12 months. Tutors may be matched with an individual student, or may assist in the learning centre or in a class.
Adult literacy volunteer training delivery modes
At Metropolitan South Institute of TAFE's Yeronga campus, the course is offered in a blended delivery mode with some face-to-face sessions and some parts of the course delivered online.
At the Mt Gravatt and Loganlea campuses the course is offered in a face-to-face delivery mode with weekly sessions held during the day.
From time to time there may be variations in the delivery pattern such as an intensive five week program or an evening course.
Volunteer tutor training courses are also occasionally offered in partnership with a community based organisation.
Students (tutors) are assessed through participation, short written responses to set questions, and/or a small group project.

This course is provided free of charge to Queenslanders who wish to volunteer with helping another adult improve their literacy skills.
