Alcohol and drugs
Supply, possession and use of non-prescription drugs is strictly prohibited on campus property and at institute events. Students are not permitted to bring alcohol on any campus or to any activity (including off campus activity). Students found to be in contravention of this rule will face disciplinary action, which may include suspension, expulsion and/or police action. Alcohol is available under controlled circumstances within training restaurants only.
Attendance
Students are expected to attend classes regularly. Absences should be discussed with teaching staff, as continued absences will result in students not participating in those stages of the learning processes or assessment. Continued absences (or not achieving competency) may affect Centrelink benefits. Parents may be contacted where students are under 18 years of age. If you are an apprentice/trainee, your employer will be notified of all absences. If you are an ETRF/school-based apprentice/trainee, your school will be notified of all absences. As a Visa requirement for international students, continued absences will be reported to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC).
Computer facilities
IT resources are provided to assist education and training. Students are prohibited from accessing or displaying obscene, offensive, discriminatory, illegal, fraudulent or pornographic material. The system records details of all internet activity.
The following are criminal acts and any breach of the student rules will be dealt with by the Institute accordingly:
-
damage
-
unauthorised accessing
-
violating copyright
-
downloading of inappropriate material
-
misuse of information.
Metropolitan South Institute of TAFE reserves the right to pass on or to charge students for additional internet use, other than that provided at the time of enrolment.
Discipline
The Institute has systems and processes in place to manage and deal with any disciplinary matters or any instances of misconduct that may arise whilst studying with us. For further information, please refer to the TAFE Queensland Student Rules [PDF 140kb].
Students may appeal against disciplinary decisions. An Appeal Committee will be established for conducting hearings. Students have five days in which to lodge a written notice of appeal after receiving notification of any disciplinary action from an Educational Manager/Director. This document should specify the grounds on which they are appealing. The Appeals Committee must meet within five days of the lodgment of the appeal. The Appeals Committee will notify the student of the allegations against them and their rights. They will conduct a hearing and send their recommendation to the Institute Director. The student will be informed in writing within five working days of the Institute Director's decision.
Dress standards
Students are requested to wear neat, clean, casual clothing at all times. Bare feet will not be accepted as per the Workplace Health and Safety Act 1995. In addition you may be expected to wear specific clothing, footwear and/or eyewear in accordance with workplace health and safety rules.
Eating and drinking in classrooms
Eating and drinking is not permitted in classrooms, corridors and buildings. Bottled water is permitted except in the computer rooms. This applies equally to staff and students.
Loan of institute resources to students (equipment only)
The Institute has specified equipment for the purpose of loaning to students for use on and off campus so that program objectives can be achieved. The use of this equipment for any other purpose is not permitted. Please see your teacher for further information.
Students are responsible for the loss and damage of institute property provided on loan and will be required to pay for such loss or damage.
Mobile phones
Mobile phones are to be switched off during classes. In exceptional circumstances, a student may need to leave a mobile phone on (e.g. family illness or emergency). This should be negotiated with teaching staff before a class commences.
Property damage
If you become aware of damage to institute property, you are required to report it to a person in authority (eg. a teacher, administration staff member, security or maintenance person).
Persons wilfully damaging property will be held liable for cost and may be disciplined or expelled.
Smoking
Smoking and passive smoking are recognised health risks. Government Acts and regulations prohibit smoking within all institute vehicles and buildings (including areas outside windows and doors, or under eaves or roofs). Areas where smoking is permitted are clearly marked.
Student ID cards
All students are required to have a student ID card, which must be carried at all times during your study at Metropolitan South. Your ID card allows recognition as a bona-fide Metropolitan South student to teachers and general staff and will be required when borrowing from the library, for the use of institute facilities and sitting exams. If you are unable to show your ID when requested by security/institute staff you may be removed from campus.
Student cards are available from the customer service centre.
Photographic session times are advised at the beginning of each semester. Lost or stolen student cards can be replaced for a fee.
