"The practical training is the best part"
The Kiribati-Australia Nursing Initiative is an AusAID-funded project which was awarded to Griffith University in association with MSIT to provide educational opportunities to Kiribati students in the area of nursing.
19 year old Terieta Tetuai says the initiative is a fantastic experience and is working hard to gain a qualification to progress his nursing career.
"I really miss home and my family but I'm starting to love Australia. I'm having a great time learning with the other students in my class, it's a really close group and we all help each other out.
"The practical training is the best part. I always wanted to help people and this program is giving me the skills to do so professionally. When I graduate I have the option of working in Australia or returning to support my local community," said Terieta.
Both Australia and Kiribati are benefiting through the expanded educational and employment opportunities.
The project provides successful students with an internationally recognised qualification at a time when there is a severe local and global shortage of nurses.
